George Buchanan is a Sydney based artist and maker whose creative practice is focused on sustainable messaging, often using recycled/repurposed materials in her works. NIDA trained, Buchanan embraces a vast range of materials and fabrication skills in her creative practice using specialised tools and machinery. With 18 years in the prop making industry, Buchanan’s work is of an exceptionally high professional standard. Her work is often participatory in nature. She designs her work to be inclusive for audiences with special needs and age groups, often incorporating sensory and immersive elements to her work such as light, movement, sound, texture, aroma and bright colours, adopting the rules of universal design in order to focus on accessibility and inlcusion.
Buchanan has produced large-scale public artworks for Vivid Sydney, City of Sydney, Sydney Opera house, Cushman & Wakefield, Queen Victoria Building, AMP, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Wollongong City Council, George's Roger Council, Casula Powerhouse, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Highlight Festival New Zealand, Colabs Festival, Floriade Canberra, Westfield, 4 Pines and Commonwealth Bank.
Buchanan has also fabricated major works for a number of Australia’s most celebrated artists including Tianli Zu, David Capra & Guan Wei, Dell, Katy Plummer, Lauren Brincat, MCA Art Play and more.
In 2021, George received the winning title of Master Maker on Channel 10’s ‘Making It Australia’, a competition with some of Australia's best creative makers.
